Word Wednesday: Botryoidal

Botryoidal (bot-ree-OY-dul) describes a mineral surface made of rounded, adjoining bumps that resemble a cluster of grapes. The word comes from the Greek word for a bunch of grapes.
How does it form?
Botryoidal surfaces develop when many tiny crystals grow outward from numerous points at nearly the same time. As the rounded growths expand, they meet one another and create the familiar bubbly surface. A cut specimen may reveal layers beneath those rounded forms.
Where might you see it?
Hematite, malachite, chalcedony, goethite, prehnite, smithsonite, and fluorite can all form botryoidal specimens. The term describes shape or habit—not one specific mineral—so color alone cannot identify it.
Collector tip
Look at the luster, hardness, streak, weight, and locality before assigning a mineral name. Handle delicate rounded surfaces carefully because thin coatings and projecting forms can chip.
